Summer crappie fishing scares off a lot of anglers who did just fine in April. The fish that were stacked in three feet of water around brush and stumps have vanished, and the water that looks the same on the surface is now holding fish forty feet down or not holding fish at all. The good news is that summer crappie are more predictable than spring crappie, not less. You just have to stop looking where you used to look.
When Summer Actually Starts
For crappie purposes, summer isn't a date on the calendar. It starts when the postspawn transition finishes and the fish have pushed out of the shallows for good, usually sometime in June on most reservoirs, and it runs through August into early September. The real marker isn't the month. It's surface temperature holding consistently in the upper 70s to mid 80s. Once that happens, the shallow bite is done for the season and won't come back until fall turnover cools things off again.
The Water Temperature That Matters
Surface temperature tells you the season is here, but it's not the number that puts fish on your screen. Crappie want water in the 68 to 75 degree range, and in a deep reservoir during summer, that band exists below the surface, not at it. This is where the thermocline comes in. Below a certain depth, oxygen drops off fast and crappie won't hold there no matter how good the structure looks. Above the thermocline, the water is often too warm for their comfort even if it's not lethal. Crappie stack right at or just above that thermocline layer, and on most reservoirs that lands somewhere between 15 and 25 feet depending on clarity and how hot the summer has been. Find the thermocline with your electronics before you do anything else. It'll show up as a hazy band on your screen, and it changes reservoir to reservoir and even year to year, so don't assume last July's depth is this July's depth.
What They're Relating To
Once you know the depth band, the next question is what's holding fish inside it. Shad are the answer. Crappie in summer are chasing baitfish, and baitfish are chasing plankton and cooler water, which means both groups end up suspended over deep structure near the old creek channel rather than up shallow. A brush pile sitting at 22 feet on a secondary point isn't holding crappie because it's a brush pile. It's holding crappie because it sits at the depth where the thermocline meets the channel and the shad have parked there too. Find the bait and you've found the reason the fish are in that spot at all.
Where to Actually Look
Start with the river or creek channel that runs through the reservoir, since that channel is the highway crappie use to move between deep water and any shallower cover worth checking. Follow it and look for the classic staging spots: secondary points that drop into the channel, standing timber that was flooded when the lake was built, submerged roadbeds, and bridge pilings where the channel narrows. Ledges where the bottom breaks from 15 feet down to 30 are especially good, because they give fish a vertical wall to suspend against instead of open water with no reference point. A brush pile placed on one of these breaks, at the right depth, is about as good as summer crappie fishing gets.
Where Not to Waste Your Time
The single biggest mistake carried over from spring is checking the backs of pockets and the shallow bank cover that produced fish two months ago. That water is now too warm, often low on oxygen, and empty of crappie. Same goes for flat, featureless bottom in the main lake basin. Depth alone doesn't make a spot productive. A 25 foot flat with no channel nearby and no cover is just as dead as three feet of water in a sun baked cove. If your electronics show you the right depth but nothing but a flat gray bottom, keep running. You want depth and structure together, and the channel is what ties them to a reason fish would be there in the first place.
Reading Side Scan to Cover Water Fast
This is where side imaging earns its keep. Idle down the creek channel at 3 to 5 miles an hour with your side scan range set wide, somewhere around 100 to 150 feet per side depending on water clarity, and let it paint the channel edges as you go. You're not looking for fish yet. You're looking for brush piles, laydowns, stumps, and any hard edge where the bottom breaks toward the channel. Side scan will show these as distinct shadows and returns well before your down imaging or 2D sonar would ever catch them directly under the boat. Mark everything that looks like cover near the right depth range and keep moving. The goal in this phase is building a list of spots, not committing to one.
Confirming Fish with Down Imaging
Once you've got a handful of marked spots, go back and idle directly over each one with down imaging running. This is where you find out if the cover is actually holding fish or just sitting there empty. Down imaging gives you a clear picture of where fish are sitting relative to that piece of structure, whether they're tight to the brush or suspended a few feet off it, and whether what you're seeing is a ball of shad, a handful of crappie, or both stacked at the same depth. Crappie tend to show up as distinct arches or marks rather than the tight cloud shad make, and seeing them sitting right at your marked thermocline depth next to the brush is about as good a confirmation as you'll get before a bait ever goes in the water.
Between the two, side scan does the searching and down imaging does the deciding. Run the channel, mark the cover, then go back and let down imaging tell you which of those spots is actually worth dropping a jig into. That's the difference between running your trolling motor all day and running it to fish that are there.
